SportsMed Sweden AB (“SportsMed”), one of Sweden’s leading private providers of orthopedics, hand surgery, and physical therapy, with operations at the historic Carlanderska Hospital in Gothenburg, has entered into a strategic partnership with Broviken Gruppen II AB (“Broviken”). Broviken will become a significant owner and, together with the company’s existing owners and employees, will continue to develop the business.
SportsMed was founded in 2008 by Prof. Adad Baranto, Dr. med. Klas Halldin Lindorsson, and Dr. med. Mikael Dalén, all of whom are highly qualified orthopedic surgeons. Today, SportsMed is one of Sweden’s leading private providers of orthopedic surgery, hand surgery, and physical therapy for patients with private health insurance. SportsMed offers cutting-edge surgical expertise in the spine and neck, shoulder, hand, hip, knee, lower leg, and foot. SportsMed is the only private clinic in Sweden to offer minimally invasive surgery for herniated discs and nerve decompression in the lumbar spine. The company has succeeded in attracting skilled staff who, thanks to an uninterrupted chain of care, provide high quality, excellent service, and high availability.
In 2022, the company performed over 2,000 surgeries, approximately 15,000 doctor visits, and approximately 15,000 physical therapy visits. All surgeries and visits take place in well-equipped, modern facilities at Carlanderska Hospital. All care—from the initial visit with a doctor or physical therapist to radiology, surgery, and rehabilitation—takes place under one roof.
SportsMed’s founders will continue to work within the company to the same extent as before. The goal is for Broviken and the founders to continue developing the business together in the same spirit as in the past. Patients, employees, and suppliers will therefore not be affected by this change in ownership.
“With Broviken as the majority owner, SportsMed will have better conditions, resources, and strategic expertise to continue its development. As founders, we now have the opportunity to focus more on the medical development of SportsMed. Broviken also shares our view on core values and corporate culture, which are key to building a successful company,”, says Adad Baranto, CEO of SportsMed.
Anders Törnsten, Investment Manager at Broviken, comments:
“We are very pleased to welcome SportsMed to the Broviken family. SportsMed is a very well-managed, growing company that provides a service that makes a big difference for its patients every day. As such, it meets many of our investment criteria. The current owners have established a strong market position by delivering a high level of service and the best surgical outcomes. “We look forward to supporting the management team on their continued journey,”, says Anders Törnsten, Investment Manager at Broviken.
